Susan's Natural World - Food & Vitamins

   Pain and Inflammation

There are natural alternatives to the drugs we use to relieve pain and
inflammation. The first thing to consider is the pH balance of your body.
Like everything in nature, we are composed of complex systems which
thrive at their peak when they are balanced.

We must first, of course, look at the diet.  The standard American diet is
so overly processed that your body stays in a constant acidic state.  When
your body is overly acidic you will create inflammation.  Because we are all
unique individuals, each person’s inflammation will manifest in their body’s
weakest point (i.e., gums, joints, kidneys, lungs, etc.).

Some of my favorite foods and supplements for these problems are:
Healthy fats, such as olive oil, omega-3 fish oils, flaxseeds and flaxseed
oil, sesame, etc. Healthy spices, such as ginger, cinnamon, turmeric.
Cherries and celery - help relieve the pain of gout. Calcium, magnesium
and potassium - help to relax nerves, sooth muscles and alleviate cramps.
Vitamin B complex - helps to soothe nerves and stress. Green drinks
   - help to alkalize the body and soothe muscles. Pineapple - contains an
enzyme, bromelain, that is a natural anti-inflammatory.

Drink lots of water, avoid sugar, white flour and ALL hydrogenated and
partially-hydrogenated fats.  These cause pain and clog arteries.

MSM, a sulphur complex, helps with all connective tissue. Glucosamine
and chondroitin replace cartilage. Alfalfa, yucca and devil’s claw were
used by the Native Americans for joint pain.

Of course, no one should use every one of these herbal remedies.  You
might begin with a few and experiment. Be sure to advise your doctor of
any natural supplements that you are using.
